Fire Breaks Out At House In Northern Westchester

A home with an expansive view of the Hudson River was damaged by a fire that started in the chimney chase, according to the Mohegan Volunteer Fire Department.

The fire started around 12:10 a.m. Thursday at the home on Forest Avenue in Cortlandt, the department said.

Upon arrival, firefighters found an active fire visible from the wood chimney chase on the exterior of the home. With fire showing, a first alarm was issued.

Due to the home being setback from the roadway access to the fire hydrant, hose lines had to be stretched and firefighters had to utilize a 24-foot extension ladder while Ladder 35 used its aerial lighting to light the roof operations, the department added.

The fire was contained to the chimney chase with minor extension found in the interior walls of the first floor up to the second floor. Once the area was opened up from the exterior, the fire was extinguished by 2:30 a.m.

Firefighters checked the entire residence to ensure there was no additional fire spread and none was found. Due to the fire, the home suffered water damage.

Also assisting on scene were Mohegan Volunteer Fire Association Volunteer Ambulance Corps 69B2, Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department, Buchanan Eng Co., Cortlandt Volunteer Ambulance Corps, New York State Police, and Westchester County Dept of Emergency Services. The Putnam Valley Volunteer Fire Department and Yorktown Heights Volunteer FD provided standby at Mohegan FD Headquarters.
